Real Madrid are beginning to accept defeat in their push to sign Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in January, a report has revealed.

Alexander-Arnold is Madrid's top target for the summer transfer window when, as it stands, he will be a free agent, but the Spanish side tried their luck for a cut-price move earlier this month to try and address their injury crisis in defence.

Liverpool rejected the advances almost immediately, leaving Madrid mulling over another bid. According to Relevo, the chances of another offer being made are incredibly slim, with Madrid accepting a January switch is going to be too difficult to pull off.

Not only are Liverpool refusing to entertain the idea of selling Alexander-Arnold while they are pushing to win the Premier League title, but the right-back has also vowed not to force an exit from his boyhood club.

Alexander-Arnold also believes that a mid-season switch to Spain is not the wisest move for his career and so, with nobody at Anfield prepared to listen to Madrid's proposals, a January transfer has effectively been ruled out.

News of Madrid's failure to land Alexander-Arnold will not impress manager Carlo Ancelotti, who is reported to have clashed with those in charge behind the scenes over their reluctance to invest in the squad this month.

Dani Carvajal's long-term injury has left Lucas Vazquez as the only recognised right-back in the squad, and Ancelotti has begun to accept that there will be no reinforcements before the summer.
