Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal has spoken about life under new manager Xabi Alonso and shared details of his difficult journey back from injury.
Speaking to DAZN ahead of Real Madrid’s FIFA Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal, the experienced right-back gave insight into how the team is adjusting under their new coach and how he fought to return to fitness.
Carvajal, who suffered a serious knee injury in October 2024 during a match against Villarreal, has been out for around eight months.
“With these kinds of injuries, the most important thing is to avoid setbacks like infections or rushing the process,” he explained.
“I had to take it step by step, walking with crutches, working in the gym, spending time in the pool, and then slowly starting to run again.”
Now back in training with the first team, Carvajal admitted that the time away from the pitch has helped him grow as a person.
“You really start to appreciate the little things – training every day, being available to help the team, just being on the pitch. I feel very good now, and I’m grateful to be back.”

On the subject of Xabi Alonso, who recently took over as manager, Carvajal shared high praise.
“He knows the club very well. He has not come in trying to change everything at once. He os trying to keep continuity, especially since we just finished a very long season,” he said.
Fans have noticed the intensity of Real Madrid’s recent training sessions under Alonso, and Carvajal confirmed it. “He’s full of energy and gives very clear instructions. But shaping a new style of play takes time,” he added.
As Real Madrid prepare for their Club World Cup debut, Carvajal’s return adds valuable experience, and Alonso’s steady start is giving the team belief.
The foundation is being laid for what could be another memorable chapter for Los Blancos.
