The Benfica left-back grew up in the club’s academy system before transferring to Manchester United in 2020. He failed to make the breakthrough at Old Trafford however, moving first on loan to Benfica in January 2024 before a permanent €6 million deal last summer.
Benfica’s deal for the Spaniard included an €18m buyback option and the buyout clause for other interested clubs stands at €60m.
Now Madrid want to utilise those clauses to land Carreras with the help of Manchester United - meaning Liverpool miss out on his signature.
According to AS, Madrid plan to ask Man Utd to execute their €18m buyback option and will then buy Carreras from the English side for €30m to €35m.
They favour this option as although Carreras is well-liked, they do not anticipate paying €60m to sign him.
It means using United as a bridging club and they will then profit on a player they probably undersold in the first place.
And with Liverpool locked out of the arrangement .
This season Carreras has played 47 matches for Benfica in all competitions, scoring four times and providing five assists.
The Spain under-21 international has been a Champions League mainstay, impressing in the competition as Benfica made a run to the last 16 - where they were defeated by Barcelona.
