According to The Tilehurst End, the Royals are looking to bring in the Costa Rican on a temporary basis for the rest of the season.

Bennette spent the second half of the previous campaign on loan with Greek side Aris Thessaloniki, where he made just two league appearances (all stats from Fbref).

The winger has struggled for game time at Sunderland, and will need to seek another loan move this year in order to receive regular minutes.

The 20-year-old has previously made 16 appearances in the Championship for the Black Cats, all of which have come as a substitute.

It has been reported by Bloomberg that former Wycombe Wanderers owner Rob Couhig is closing in on a £30 million takeover of Reading.

Ruben Selles has previously confirmed that the Royals cannot make any new additions until a takeover is completed.

In that context, the development surrounding the potential pursuit of Bennette could also be positive news for the completion of the takeover process.

Bennette will be hoping that this move can earn him the playing time he needs to develop into a Championship calibre player.

Reading will be aiming to bolster their squad prior to the end of the transfer window next week, which Couhig’s ownership could oversee if their purchase of the Berkshire outfit is confirmed in time.

Selles’ side will be aiming to compete in League One, and improve on their 17th place finish in the table last year.

The Royals have seen the likes of Clinton Mola, Matty Carson and Dean Bouzanis all depart this summer without any replacements arriving.

So it could prove a very busy end to the window for Reading, if their EFL transfer restrictions are lifted ahead of the 30 August deadline.

Reading’s start to the 2024/25 season

Reading have made a positive start to the new campaign, earning four points from a possible six so far.

A 1-1 draw away to promotion favourites Birmingham City on the opening day was followed up with a victory over Wigan Athletic at home last weekend.

Next up for Selles’ side will be an away trip to the newly-promoted Wrexham, who have also won one and drawn one from their first two games.

The two sides will meet at the Racecourse Ground on 24 August in a 3pm kick-off.

Jewison Bennette signing is a positive step for Reading

Reading lining up moves for when the takeover will be complete is a good first step for the prospective new owners.

They will not have a lot of time to complete deals, so getting all their ducks lined up in a row is a smart use of their remaining days.

Bennette will be an exciting addition, as he is a bright young player that has the potential to be a top prospect in League One.

The 20-year-old is also a versatile option and can operate on either wing, which could prove a very useful asset to have in the squad this season.
