Florian Plettenberg has reported that RB Leipzig are pressing ahead with plans to replace Xavi Simons, who is set to join Chelsea following the Bundesliga opener against Bayern Munich. Their preferred choice is Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, a player who has long been earmarked as one of England’s brightest midfield prospects.
According to Plettenberg, “Leipzig have agreed personal terms with the 22 y/o playmaker Elliott. LFC keen to let him go with a suitable offer.” It is a revelation that will surprise many Liverpool supporters, especially given Elliott’s role in the squad under Arne Slot.

RB Leipzig’s recruitment policy has been admired across Europe for its ability to identify and develop emerging talent. The pursuit of Elliott fits this profile perfectly. A versatile midfielder with creativity, energy and an eye for unlocking defences, Elliott’s development at Liverpool has been steady but perhaps overshadowed by the club’s established stars.
For Leipzig, he represents a player who can immediately influence their attacking rhythm. Plettenberg’s report makes clear their intent: Elliott is their number one target and negotiations are already well advanced.
Liverpool’s stance is pragmatic. With the club building for the future under Arne Slot and the squad still evolving after last season’s Premier League title triumph, the hierarchy are considering all options. Elliott has been admired by the coaching staff for his versatility and technical quality, but the Reds are not ruling out a transfer should Leipzig meet their valuation.

If Elliott departs, it would represent more than just a reshuffle. The midfielder has been part of Liverpool’s long-term planning, seen as a bridge between youthful exuberance and first-team reliability. Letting him go could be a calculated risk, particularly given the physical demands of English football and the need for depth across domestic and European campaigns.
For now, Leipzig are confident and Elliott’s representatives are engaged in constructive talks. Liverpool supporters, however, may be bracing themselves for the departure of a fan favourite whose career is only just beginning to flourish.
Harvey Elliott has been one of the few players to capture the imagination of the Anfield crowd in recent years, largely because of his commitment, drive and technical flair. The idea of letting him leave for Leipzig feels like a gamble.
Yes, Liverpool have strong midfield options, but Elliott has always been regarded as a player for the future. His creativity from deeper positions and ability to adapt in multiple roles are rare qualities. Many fans will ask why the club would be prepared to cash in now, particularly after winning the league under Arne Slot last season.
It is understandable that Leipzig are interested, as Elliott fits their profile perfectly, but supporters may feel uneasy about losing a player who grew into his role with patience and resilience. This is not just about statistics, it is about the energy and connection he brings when stepping on the pitch.
If this deal does go through, fans will expect Liverpool to reinvest wisely and ensure that midfield depth remains strong enough to compete at the highest level.
