RB Leipzig 0-1 Liverpool: For the first time in the Reds’ history, they have won 11 of their opening 12 games of the season.

Enigmatic Liverpool frontman Darwin Nunez’s second goal this term was enough to secure three victories from three for The Reds in the Champions League.

The German hosts had the ball in the net twice, but both times offside and Caoimhin Kelleher made two key saves in yet another outstanding display by the number two by name alone.

Despite his heroics, the Irish stopper did fail to head a long ball clear as both he and Ibrahima Konate dallied under threat and Benjamin Sesko nearly bent the ball into the far corner.

Leipzig certainly had their moments as Antonio Nusa released Ikoma Lois Openda, who misscontrolled before firing into the top left corner – only to be ruled offside.

Arne Slot’s side punished the Bundesliga outfit for their discrepancies as Kostas Tsimikas’ delivery reached Mohamed Salah at the back post who headed across the goal and Nunez helped it over.

The Uruguayan striker nearly doubled his tally, but former Anfield goalkeeper Peter Gulasci denied his header just as he did captain Virgil van Dijk from a corner.

Willi Orban clumsily tripped Nunez in the box, but referee Sandro Schärer was unmoved in what was befitting of a rather bizarre display of officiating. VAR did not overrule him.

In-form winger Cody Gakpo should have doubled the deficit after a miscommunication between Arthur Vermeeren and Lutsharel Geertrudia but placed straight at Gulasci.

Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai interchanged incisively before the former finessed an effort which kissed the bar and queued a rendition of the Argentinian’s new fan favourite song from the travelling Kop.

With the contest still hanging in the balance, Xavi Simons rolled the ball to Sesko, but his effort lacked conviction. Openda rebounded wide. Quality was conspicuous by its absence.

Soon after Kelleher tipped over Simons’ deflected effort, but he could only push Benjamin Hendricks’ shot to Openda who scored but was offside again.

Late on Gakpo arrowed towards the left corner, but Gulsaci denied him, another stellar save on the night. There was to be no second goal for Liverpool but a seventh shutout and three more points.
