Newcastle took a giant step towards Wembley this week after beating Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. The Magpies are just 90 minutes from Wembley and the chance to end one of English football’s most famous trophy droughts.

After Eddie Howe’s side edged closer to a domestic cup final, we’ve ranked every Premier League team by their current trophy drought.

For clarification, a major trophy includes the top-flight league title, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League.

1. Manchester United

Erik ten Hag guided Manchester United to FA Cup success last season, as the Red Devils beat Manchester City at Wembley. Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo secured silverware, in the second successive Manchester Derby FA Cup final. The win briefly provided Ten Hag with a stay of execution, though he was dismissed after a tough start to the 2024/25 campaign.

2. Manchester City

Pep Guardiola led Manchester City to yet more history last season, as the Citizens became the first team in English top-flight history to win four consecutive league titles. An unprecedented period of dominance for the Blues.

3. Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp signed off with silverware as Liverpool lifted the League Cup last season. Virgil van Dijk’s extra-time goal earned a 1-0 win over Chelsea and a record-extending 10th League Cup for the Reds.

4. West Ham

Jarrod Bowen’s last-gasp goal ended West Ham’s 43-year wait for a major trophy in 2023. The Hammers beat Fiorentina in the final to win the Europa Conference League under David Moyes.

5. Chelsea

Chelsea upset the odds to win the Champions League for a second time in 2021. Just months after taking the reins, Thomas Tuchel led the Blues to European success with a 1-0 win over compatriots Manchester City in Porto. Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal for the West London side.

6. Leicester City

Leicester lifted the FA Cup for the first time in their history during the 2020/21 season. The Foxes overcame Chelsea at Wembley, courtesy of Youri Tielemans’s stunning strike from distance. It was a second major trophy in five years for Leicester, following their shock Premier League triumph in 2016.

7. Arsenal

Mikel Arteta led Arsenal to the FA Cup during his first half-season in charge of the Gunners. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the inspiration behind the triumph, scoring braces in both the semi-final and final. His double downed Chelsea in a behind-closed-doors final as Arsenal clinched the cup.

8. Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou is the latest man handed the task of ending Tottenham’s trophy drought. It’s been 17 years since the club’s last trophy, when a Jonathan Woodgate header secured a League Cup final victory over Chelsea. Spurs had fallen behind to Didier Drogba’s goal but Juande Ramos’s side bounced back with goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Woodgate ensuring the trophy headed to North London.

9. Aston Villa

Aston Villa cruised to a 3-0 win over Leeds United to win the League Cup in 1996. Goals from Savo Milosevic, Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke secured a comfortable win and Villa’s fifth League Cup triumph. It was a second League Cup win in three seasons for The Villans but almost three decades have now passed since their last success.

10. Everton

Everton put aside poor league form to win the FA Cup in 1994/95. Despite a relegation battle in the Premier League, the Toffees upset Manchester United to win 1-0 at Wembley. Paul Rideout scored the only goal.

11. Nottingham Forest

Brian Clough’s final trophy as Nottingham Forest manager arrived with success in the 1990 League Cup. It was the conclusion of an astonishing period for Clough’s side, who won seven major trophies during his reign, including the top-flight title and back-to-back European Cups.

12. Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town made history after winning the UEFA Cup under the great Sir Bobby Robson in 1981. The Tractor Boys beat AZ Alkmaar over two legs in the decider, holding on in the return leg to win 5-4 on aggregate. They are one of just five English clubs to have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League, alongside Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester United.

13. Wolves

Wolves won the League Cup in 1980 after Andy Gray’s goal earned the side a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest. It was a statement result from Wolves at Wembley, with Forest the reigning European champions at that time.

14. Southampton

Southampton stunned Manchester United to win the FA Cup for the first – and so far only – time in their history in 1976. The second-tier Saints had finished sixth in the Second Division, but beat a Manchester United team who ended the campaign third in the top tier 1-0 at Wembley.

15. Newcastle

Eddie Howe’s side are in a strong position to reach the League Cup final this season as the Magpies aim to end a drought that has reached 70 years in 2025. Newcastle beat Manchester City 3–1 in the 1955 FA Cup final, the club’s third success in the competition in five years and the sixth overall. It’s been a barren run ever since.

16. Brighton

Brighton are one of five Premier League teams to have never won a major trophy. The Seagulls have reached just one major final, losing the 1983 FA Cup decider to Manchester United after a replay.

17. Bournemouth

Bournemouth are flying high in the Premier League this season with Andoni Iraola’s side chasing European football. Having rose through the divisions to cement their place in the top flight, a long-awaited trophy will be in their sights.

18. Brentford

Brentford are another side whose wait for silverware has spanned their entire history. The Bees have never reached a major domestic cup final.

19. Fulham

Fulham have failed to win a major trophy in their 146-year history. The Cottagers came close in 2010 after reaching the Europa League decider. Roy Hodgson’s side lost to Atletico Madrid in extra-time.

20. Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace hold the longest trophy drought in England’s top flight with the Eagles ‘boasting’ an empty cabinet. Palace have twice reached the FA Cup final, both against Manchester United, but lost on each occasion. Their most recent final appearance came in 2016.
