With mounting interest in Rangers striker Hamza Igamane, the situation continues to evolve quickly. There is a growing sense that any fee Rangers can bring in here would be deemed a success. The Moroccan international has not exactly lit up Ibrox, and while his numbers are respectable, there is still a lack of standout qualities that mark him as a mainstay up front. He is not rapid, not a target man, does not link up particularly well, and while his finishing is decent, it is not enough on its own to compensate.
According to reports, there has been strong movement from French side Lille. It is claimed that Igamane has already agreed personal terms with the Ligue 1 outfit, and all that remains is for Rangers and Lille to agree on a fee. That sum is believed to be in the region of £20 million or more, which would represent an excellent return for a player who, despite his youth and potential, is not the ideal lone striker.
This all comes amid fresh speculation from other European sides as well, with interest reportedly growing in Italy too. Should both Igamane and Cyriel Dessers depart, that would leave only Danilo as the senior striker in the squad. That is a worrying lack of depth for a club of Rangers’ stature. Even if Danilo is fit and firing, it is dangerous to rely so heavily on one man, especially over the course of a long and demanding season.
The £20 million valuation set by Rangers is certainly ambitious, but the club appears confident in the market value. The question now turns to whether Igamane fits Russell Martin’s new system better than the old. At 22, he still has time to grow and may well thrive in a two-man system with a strong foil. But reports suggest Lille believe he is ready to step up right now, and the player himself is clearly keen on the move.
Ultimately, Rangers must weigh potential against profit. And while Igamane may yet become a top striker, if the money is right, the time to sell is now.
