Rangers may have suffered a big blow already to land Vaclav Cerny permanently after his agent admitted it isn’t “realistic” for the Czech star to stay at Iborx next season.

Cerny joined the Gers in the summer transfer window on loan from Wolfsburg and has proved to be one of their standout players in an otherwise dismal domestic season.

He was outstanding against Fenerbahce in the Europa League this week, and Rangers desire to sign him permanently. He has a contract at Wolfsburg until 2027, but the German club are unlikely to keep him due to financial problems.

They have reportedly put a £6.75 million price tag on Cerny. The Bears might be able to meet that amount if the takeover goes through, but Cerny’s agent, David Nehoda, said in an interview in the Czech media that the player is highly unlikely to continue in Scotland.

He said: “I can’t say what will happen next, but I don’t think it’s very realistic for him to stay at Rangers. His contract at Wolfsburg ends in the summer of 2027, so I would assume that the club will want to recall him, or there will be interested parties who would like to buy him.

“There is already interest from France and Italy. I know Vaclav’s ambitions – to return to one of the top five leagues in Europe.”

It is clear that the player wants to play in a top-five league, and while he is enjoying his time at Rangers, he is not planning to stay beyond the end of his loan deal.

Cerny has scored six goals and provided two assists in nine Europa League games this season, and his performances have attracted clubs in France and Italy.

The 27-year-old winger has also scored 11 goals in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Rangers should still try to keep him beyond the summer and reach an agreement with him, but the chances of him staying at Ibrox for a long period look slim.
