Rangers’ interest in Leicester defender Conor Coady is one of the more intriguing links of the summer window so far. The former Wolves captain is no stranger to big moves and high expectations and with Leicester’s relegation back to the Championship confirmed the experienced centre back could be tempted by a fresh challenge. At 31 he still has plenty to offer and with Rangers undergoing a sweeping summer rebuild he fits the mould of a dependable leader who can help stabilise a chaotic backline.

The club’s plans to revamp the squad have been well documented. As Ibrox Noise highlighted, a massive clearout is under way with as many as 20 players either leaving or expected to be sold. Defence is one of the areas in urgent need of fresh blood and Coady’s Premier League pedigree would offer a level of consistency and experience that has been sorely lacking at Ibrox.

Coady is also a natural leader. He captained Wolves through some of their most stable years in the top flight and is well respected in English football circles. Ibrox Noise has noted that the new Rangers boss is targeting strong characters who can come in and change the culture in the dressing room. After seasons of dressing room leaks disharmony and soft-centred collapses Coady could be the perfect remedy.

That said there are some challenges. Coady is still under contract and while Leicester may be looking to trim their wage bill following relegation they are not likely to give him away for free. His wages are another concern. A seasoned England international who has commanded a decent pay packet at previous clubs would have to accept a reduced deal to make a move to Ibrox viable. Still according to Football Insider Rangers have already opened discussions to gauge his interest.

It would certainly be a statement signing. One that shows the club is serious about reintroducing a spine of battle-tested leaders to a side that has grown too accustomed to folding under pressure. Coady may not be a flashy option but he is exactly the kind of no-nonsense professional Rangers need right now. If the deal can be done it could turn out to be one of the smarter moves of the summer.
