Rangers have today confirmed what many expected—Barry Ferguson will not be taking the manager’s role on a permanent basis.
After weeks of speculation and mixed signals, the club has finally spoken via an official statement, confirming Ferguson’s interim spell is over and that a new manager will be appointed in due course. While the board were careful to thank him for his service, the message was crystal clear: Barry isn’t getting the job full-time.
It brings to an end a period of uncertainty for fans, many of whom were split on Ferguson’s suitability. While some backed his passion and identity as a Rangers man, others pointed out the clear tactical shortcomings and poor run of results that derailed our season and killed any chance of silverware.
Rangers, quite rightly, have decided to look elsewhere. As we covered recently, the likes of Will Still and Davide Ancelotti have already knocked us back, raising major questions about the board’s targets and our overall direction. Barry’s appointment, even temporarily, felt like a stopgap—and now the hierarchy has admitted as much.
What next? Well, as we reported earlier, there’s genuine pressure on the board to get this right. They cannot afford another experiment. Fans are rightly demanding an experienced, elite-level manager who can rebuild the club in their image—not a cheap, easy option to pacify for a few months.
Ferguson himself remains dignified, reportedly open to staying in a different capacity, but make no mistake—this isn’t his moment. The job now is too big for sentiment.
The timing of the statement, right after the season’s end, suggests Rangers are trying to move quickly, but supporters have heard that before. They want action, not vague updates. Whoever the new boss is, he’ll inherit a bloated squad, fractured confidence, and a fanbase desperate for proper leadership.
The next appointment must be ruthless, ambitious, and transformative—or this club risks slipping further behind.
