Wout Weghorst has been linked with a permanent move away from Burnley this summer.

Carlton Palmer believes it would make sense for everyone involved if Wout Weghorst leaves Burnley permanently this summer, and feels that the Clarets can command a reasonable fee for the striker.

Dutch striker Wout Weghorst signed for Burnley from German side Wolfsburg in January 2022 for a fee in the region of £12m.

He scored twice in 20 appearances for the Clarets during the second half of the 2021/22 season, but he could not prevent the club from being relegated to the Championship.

He has spent the last two seasons away from Turf Moor, having been on loan at Besiktas, Manchester United and Hoffenheim during that time.

The 31-year-old has one year remaining on his contract, and has been linked with a move to several clubs this summer, including Trabzonspor, Rangers, Ajax and FC Twente.

Ex-England international Carlton Palmer believes that Burnley should cash in on Weghorst this summer, and feels the Clarets can recuperate a reasonable sum for the physical forward.

Palmer explained that there will be plenty of interest in the Netherlands international, who represented his country at the UEFA European Championship in Germany in the summer.

"He has spent a lot of his time since he signed at Burnley out on loan. Scott Parker has said he is willing to work with the player, but, you know, he has been loaned out on multiple occasions in recent years, and he wants a permanent move.

"Burnley would get a sizeable fee for the player, and so I think it would make sense for both parties for him to move on. It would not be a shock in the coming weeks to see the player move on from Burnley. Obviously, he wants to be playing regular first-team football and to be settled at a football club.

"The Clarets will generate a decent fee that will allow them to balance the books and spend more in the transfer market. Whoever gets Wout will be getting a gifted striker who can be a regular goalscorer when on top form, so I think this represents good business for both parties.

If the rumours are to be believed, Weghorst is the subject of transfer interest from Rangers, as they look to sign a striker capable of firing them to the title in Scotland next season.

"I think Rangers could be a good fit. I think that is just speculation at this moment in time, but that could be a good fit. Whether they can afford him or not, with wages and the transfer, remains to be seen, but this is just muted.

"I am sure there will be no shortage of takers for Wout, but I wouldn't be surprised in the next week or two to see him exiting Burnley on a permanent transfer."

Burnley should cash in on Wout Weghorst

With just one year remaining on the three-and-a-half year deal that he signed upon his arrival at Turf Moor, Weghorst will surely be sold this summer rather than being sent on another loan. The Clarets will not want to risk losing the striker on a free transfer next year.

Burnley have brought in five new signings so far this summer, as well as Mike Tresor's loan from Genk being made permanent, so the sale of Weghorst would help to cover some of the transfer fees they have spent on players during the current transfer window.

Scott Parker will want some clarity on Weghorst's future soon, so that he can continue to prepare his new team for a promotion push in the Championship next season.
