Rangers’ summer window is certainly intensifying right now, with confirmation from a number of sources that Rangers are now pursuing Wolves defender Nasser Djiga. The 22-year-old with 14 Champions League appearances for Red Star Belgrade has also got, at 22, around 5 Premier League appearances for Wolves.
This would be a straight loan, no option or obligation to buy whatsoever, just like Max Aarons. You can spin this a number of ways. If these players shine at Rangers, our chances of being able to buy them are pretty much zero. Both he and Aarons are worth around £10 million. These are, to be fair, decent players. Aarons, of course, falling on hard times recently, and Djiga, who hasn’t quite got going yet.
But one thing that the Burkinese player has in his favour is those several appearances for Red Star, who are a huge team in Serbia. That would be the Serbian equivalent of Rangers. Even drawing there is like a defeat, so he knows pressure. He’s also played at the top side in Switzerland, in Basel. And even though Basel are maybe not as strong all the time as a number one side in any country would always be, they also have high demand. So the kid knows about high demand. That is something at least in his favour, not to mention those outstanding 14 appearances in Europe’s top club competition.
However, there’s something else as well, and that is very simple. Basically, he, unfortunately, like fellow Wolves loanee Fabio Silva, shares that same staple of not working out very well at Wolves, of struggling there, and then, in Silva’s case, being atrocious at Ibrox. It isn’t a great omen, to be fair. We hope this new guy is a lot more effective than the Portuguese was. He was a literal disaster at Rangers.
But unlike him, Djiga does at least have several senior appearances for teams who have high demand. We recall that Silva hadn’t even played for Porto’s first team, at least not many more times than a couple. His price of £35 million, paid by then Wolves boss Nuno Sancho, was based on his performances with the youth side. At least this new chap can offer a bit more than that.
It does appear that he will be a loan, so there’ll be another player who, if he shines, will be off at the end of the season. That isn’t ideal for sure. A very strange window, we must say.
