Rangers chase colossal Premier League defender as Squad rebuild begins

Rangers are reportedly chasing Ipswich Town’s Cameron Burgess as the summer rebuild continues at Ibrox, and this one’s very much in the mould of a classic free transfer coup. At 6ft 4in, the Aberdeen-born Australian international has the kind of imposing frame and left-sided balance Rangers have lacked for some time, and with his contract winding down, it’s no surprise the club are sniffing around.

Burgess, who helped Ipswich climb from League One to the Premier League, is experienced, physical, and won’t cost a penny—everything Rangers need right now. It aligns perfectly with the recruitment shift we’re seeing, where smart moves like this are taking priority over bloated fees. We highlighted earlier this week how Rangers are now looking hard at summer rebuild targets, and Burgess fits the new strategy to a tee.

With Barry Ferguson still in temporary charge (and 99% not keeping the job), Rangers continue working behind the scenes to line up the next boss, and as we discussed with the Gattuso development, the Ibrox board seem to be casting the net wide. Whether it’s managerial appointments or key squad additions, this summer’s clearly going to be busy.

But Rangers won’t have it easy here—reports suggest Girona are also in the mix, and Burgess is tempted by a move abroad. That could be a sticking point. The appeal of Spanish football and sunshine is always strong—but so is the lure of Ibrox, Europe, and 50,000 fans.

If Rangers can convince him, it could be a smart signing to follow through with the kind of intent shown when a Champions League-winning manager was approached. That’s the level of ambition supporters want to see—and adding someone like Burgess at the back only reinforces it.

There’s a long way to go yet in this window, and Rangers will miss out on some targets along the way. But this one makes sense, ticks a lot of boxes, and would give us depth and presence in central defence without burning a hole in the budget.

Let’s see if Ibrox wins him over.
