Under-fire Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan has been criticised as managerial target Aaron Ramsey has decided to extend his playing career instead of becoming Omer Riza’s permanent successor following strong links to the role.

The Bluebirds endured a torrid 2024/25 campaign, which ultimately ended in relegation to League One for the first time in over 20 years.

Riza had been in charge of the majority of the season, but he was sacked with a few games to go, as Ramsey stepped up to lead the team.

Cardiff City managerial latest as Aaron Ramsey set for Mexico move

Since relegation was confirmed, attention has turned to naming a new boss, with Cardiff missing out on Nathan Jones, as the boyhood fan opted to stay with Charlton Athletic.

It was then claimed that Ramsey could take the job permanently, although it was said that he would only do so if he was allowed to bring in his own backroom team.

The latest twist came on Sunday when it emerged that Ramsey is now set to sign for Mexican outfit Pumas as he looks to keep on playing.

Cardiff City criticised as managerial search continues

Naturally, Ramsey’s decision to extend his playing career prompted questions from the Cardiff support, particularly as the Bluebirds are so close to the heart of the midfielder.

And, when quizzed by FLW on whether Tan deserves to be under scrutiny, Cardiff fan pundit Matt Hall made it clear that the way this has played out hasn’t been good enough, as he insists Ramsey was right to stick to his guns.

It’s pretty straightforward, questions need to be asked of not just Vincent Tan but the board in general. They went public about how much they went after Jones, but the fact that didn’t go to plan is a big red flag.

Then, Ramsey seemed open to taking the job, so it shouldn’t be a hard deal to get done, your own club captain who wanted to retire at the club, and he moved here for one reason, but they’ve driven him halfway across the world! It is an indictment of just how poorly we’re run.

It’s pretty clear Ramsey would’ve taken the job if he had assurances over the club showing ambition in the market, his coaching staff, to change the structure of the club, and that he didn’t get those assurances puts a real fear into me and other Cardiff fans when looking to the future. It’s a sad state and it shows that whoever they appoint, nothing will change until Tan leaves.

It’s not for me to say whether it’s the right decision for Ramsey, but it probably is, as he is an inexperienced manager, so he will have wanted assurances, and if he didn’t get them, then he’s doing the right thing in not taking it and the club swallowing him up.

I do think his playing career is over though, so it will be interesting to see how he does in Mexico, but I don’t blame Ramsey one bit.”
