Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Las Palmas striker Sory Kaba.

Highlights

  • Striker Sory Kaba could be a smart signing for Sheffield Wednesday, providing valuable depth up front.
  • Kaba proved his talent with Cardiff City, scoring 8 goals in 17 appearances during a loan spell.
  • While Ugbo is the preferred choice, concerns about price may lead to the Owls pursuing Kaba as an alternate option.

Pundit Carlton Palmer believes Las Palmas striker Sory Kaba would be a good signing for Sheffield Wednesday.

According to journalist Darren Witcoop, Wednesday are one of a number of Championship clubs eyeing a move for Kaba, who is free to leave Las Palmas this summer.

Kaba has struggled for game time since joining the Spanish outfit from Midtjylland last summer, and he scored just two goals and provided one assist in 20 appearances in all competitions this season.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell at Cardiff City in the 2022-23 season, scoring eight goals in 17 appearances to help the Bluebirds to Championship survival.

Cardiff were keen to sign Kaba permanently last summer, and he was also linked with the likes of Watford, West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City, but he instead opted to join Las Palmas.

Kaba could now be set to return to English football with Wednesday, and he has emerged on the Owls' radar amid concerns they could be priced out of a move for Troyes striker Ike Ugbo, who scored seven goals in 19 appearances during his loan spell at the club in the second half of the season.

Carlton Palmer backs Sheffield Wednesday's pursuit of Sory Kaba

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Palmer said that Kaba could be a shrewd signing for Wednesday, but he admitted it would be a blow if the Owls are unable to secure Ugbo's return.

"It's reported that Sheffield Wednesday are interested in former Cardiff player Sory Kaba," Palmer said.

"Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl have already been busy in the transfer window having recruited experienced goalkeeper Ben Hamer, as well as defensive duo Max Lowe and Yan Valery.

"They signed Ike Ugbo on loan from Troyes in January and he quickly endeared himself to the Hillsborough fans.

"He proved to be the focal point for Wednesday that they were crying out for and scored seven goals in 19 appearances. "With the Owls' Championship status confirmed on the final day of the season, there was immediate clamour from the fans for Ugbo to be brought back to South Yorkshire. "However, there are fears they could be priced out of a swoop for the Canadian international, so contingency plans are already underway and they are said to be interested in another former Cardiff player in Kaba. "The 28-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell at Cardiff in the 2022-23 season, but a permanent move did not materialise. "He joined Spanish outfit Las Palmas last year, but he's reportedly free to leave the club. "Sheffield Wednesday will not be the only Championship club interested in him. "They need that focal point, Ugbo was a brilliant signing for them and it's a shame they can't make that a permanent transfer. "I think they need to bring in a couple of strikers and that's where Danny Rohl is looking. "If Kaba is available on a free, that could prove to be a smart bit of business.

"Sheffield Wednesday are doing their business early and Danny Rohl is bringing in some quality players."

Sory Kaba could be the perfect Ike Ugbo alternative for Sheffield Wednesday

It is difficult to disagree with Palmer that Kaba would be a smart signing for Wednesday.

Kaba's poor form at Las Palmas may raise concerns for Owls supporters, but he has not been given a proper chance at the Spanish club, and he has proven he can be a prolific scorer in the Championship previously.

The striker came into a Cardiff team struggling towards the bottom of the table, but his goals kept the Bluebirds in the division, and he would surely thrive in a more successful side.
