Starting XI Prediction: How Will Liverpool Lineup for Champions League Clash with PSG

After a hugely productive few weeks in the Premier League, Liverpool’s attention now turns to the UEFA Champions League as they travel to Paris to face PSG in the opening leg of their last-16 clash.

The Reds come into this one off the back of hugely impressive victories over Manchester City and Newcastle United, sending them 13 points clear at the top of the table.

In terms of absences for this one, Joe Gomez, Conor Bradley and Tyler Morton are all certainly ruled out for this one. Cody Gakpo remains a doubt despite coming off the bench in Liverpool’s victory over Newcastle United one week ago.

With that being said, let’s take a look at our predicted lineup for this one…

One Change at the Back

Alisson Becker will remain in goal for this one, coming into the game off the back of two consecutive clean sheets. Ahead of him, Virgil Van Dijk will captain the side from the heart of defence and will be joined by his usual partner Ibou Konate.

At left-back, Andy Robertson will come back into the side in place of Kostas Tsimikas after being rested in the victory over Newcastle. With no depth at all at right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold will certainly start in his usual role.

Verdict: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk (C), Robertson

Four Midfielders

Slot could be set to make an interesting tactical tweak for this one. I suspect that the Dutchman will opt to start with four midfielders, just like he did in Liverpool’s huge victory away to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch will partner each other at the base of the midfield and will be joined by two advanced midfielders, that will effectively form a double press down the middle.

Those players will be Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones, who will come into the side after missing the clash with Newcastle United. The latter of those will effectively be used as an attacker, if that system is correct.

Verdict: Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Jones

Salah and Who?

That leaves the two wide positions available. Mohamed Salah will of course start on the right-wing and will look to continue his world-class campaign.

Diogo Jota will likely drop out of the starting eleven to make way for the previously mentioned Jones.

With Gakpo still a doubt for this one, Luis Diaz is in line to keep his place in the starting eleven on the left-wing.

Verdict: Salah, Diaz

Starting XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk (C), Robertson, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Jones, Salah, Diaz

Bench: Kelleher, Jaros, Quansah, Tsimikas, Endo, McConnell, Nyoni, Elliott, Gakpo, Jota, Nunez, Chiesa
