Dominant in Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain are struggling in the UEFA Champions League. With just one win in their first five matches, they are currently on course for a premature exit from the competition, with a tough fixture against Manchester City still to come.
But despite their under-performance in the Champions League, Luis Enrique has remained insistent that this PSG is better than the one that strolled to the Ligue 1 title and made the Champions League final last season. Performances in Europe, including the 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in midweek, have not changed his perception.
“The ranking (25th in the League Phase) is not deserved; we should have nine points. I like what I see. I like what I saw in Munich,” said the PSG manager, whose appraisal of the performance at the Allianz Arena has been much more positive than that of the media.
He added, “I know it isn’t enough to see something positive, I know that. We can improve all aspects and I am very optimistic.” Insistent that this is a stronger side, despite Kylian Mbappé’s summer departure, PSG must now make that reflect in their performances – and results – in the Champions League, if they are to avoid a hasty exit.
