Bayern had been keen to secure an extension for Upamecano, with talks beginning several weeks ago. At one stage, an agreement seemed to be a mere formality. However, negotiations have since stalled due to internal financial tensions, particularly concerning player salaries.
The crux of the impasse lies in Bayern’s recent wage structure. With stars like Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, and Joshua Kimmich reportedly earning substantial sums, Upamecano is now demanding parity. Bayern, facing financial balancing pressures, have so far been reluctant to meet his expectations.
This stalemate is problematic for Bayern’s defensive planning. Eric Dier is set to leave the club, Hiroki Itō is currently sidelined through injury, and Min-jae Kim could also depart if a suitable offer arrives. Upamecano’s uncertain status, therefore, leaves the club vulnerable at the back as they head into a critical summer transfer window.
As for PSG, while the interest in Upamecano is real, the French champions have yet to make a formal offer or any concrete move. However, given the player's profile and the club’s continuous search for defensive reinforcements, it’s a situation worth monitoring closely.
Should Upamecano decide not to renew with Bayern, PSG could emerge as a top destination, especially with the allure of returning to his native France and the opportunity to compete for the Champions League with a squad that remains one of Europe’s elite.
For now, the ball remains in Bayern’s court, but with contract talks in limbo and PSG lurking, the summer could bring unexpected twists in Upamecano’s future.
