Manchester City are closing in on a total agreement for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, it has been revealed.

The Premier League giants have been active in the transfer market in the final weeks of the window, with their goalkeeping department emerging as the headline issue despite re-signing James Trafford from Burnley earlier in the summer.

Ederson’s future has remained uncertain since the start, with concrete interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray testing City’s resolve. That uncertainty has prompted Etihad Stadium bosses to make a move for Italy’s No.1, who has been open to a new challenge away from Paris.

For Pep Guardiola’s side, the need to plan for life beyond Ederson has become increasingly urgent. The Brazilian has been a mainstay at City for eight seasons, underpinning their build-up play and defining the role of a modern goalkeeper in England.

However, with his contract running until 2026 and offers of lucrative wages on the table elsewhere, City are bracing themselves for a possible change, and Gianluigi Donnarumma – still only 26 – represents a long-term solution who fits the club’s ambitions.

The Italian has been closely monitored by Manchester City officials since his AC Milan breakthrough, and talks in recent weeks have accelerated as PSG entertain the prospect of an exit for the player having already signed a direct replacement in Lucas Chevalier.

According to the information of journalist Fabrizio Romano, an agreement between Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain over the transfer of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma ‘is almost OK’.

It is detailed that conversations between the two clubs are centering around a total package worth in the region of €30 million to €35 million, but the situation continues to depend on the future of Ederson.

On the Brazilian shot-stopper, conversations remain ongoing over a move for the 32-year-old, with Romano’s latest information revealing that Galatasaray and Manchester City were, once again, in contact on Saturday over a deal.

The coming days are expected to be decisive, with City’s willingness to finalise Donnarumma’s arrival hinging on whether Ederson’s exit is confirmed in time. Galatasaray’s involvement adds a new layer to proceedings, given their ambition to compete more aggressively in Europe.

If City succeed in tying up Donnarumma’s transfer, it could represent one of the most significant moves of the summer across Europe. Not only would Pep Guardiola secure a ready-made replacement, but also a goalkeeper who could anchor Manchester City’s project for the next decade.

Meanwhile, should Ederson remain, the club would face an internal challenge of balancing the futures of James Trafford and Stefan Ortega, both of whom are eager for regular football, while the latter has been heavily linked with a departure of his own.

In the meantime, Trafford is likely to hold down the starting berth for Manchester City between the posts, and has the faith of Pep Guardiola despite his errors against Tottenham in the Premier League. While it also remains to be seen how the club will manage Trafford and Donnarumma’s potential involvement on the pitch, should the latter join the squad.
