Celtic full back Adam Montgomery has left the club to join Livingstone on a season long loan.
The Scottish defender, who is now 23, signed his first professional contract at Celtic as a teenager way back in 2019. He impressed many supporters during his early outings and even featured in some Europa League matches – both qualifying and competition proper.
In 2021, Montgomery was handed a contract extension until February 2025, around the time that he starred in Celtic’s 3-2 victory over Spanish giants Real Betis in the Europa League. He also featured in 16 matches for the club during that 2021/22 season.
Despite showing early promise, and setting up a goal for Jota in Celtic’s first away win under Ange Postecoglou, Montgomery soon found first team appearances hard to come by. Indeed, he only amassed 20 matches in the Hoops of Celtic.
Adam Montgomery has found himself out on loan for each of the last five years, featuring for a host of clubs including Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Fleetwood Town and Motherwell.
Last season, the young Celt was sent to wear the hoops of Queen’s Park in the Scottish Championship but any hopes of resurrecting his Celtic career now look to be dashed with another temporary departure, to West Lothian.
Further contract extensions have been granted to the player throughout his loan spells away from Paradise, but at the age of 23 it looks like Montgomery will not now be given a chance to establish himself in Glasgow’s East End.
That said, two years remain on his current Celtic deal so perhaps the player may hope that there could be one final opportunity to prove his worth in Scotland’s top flight and show he can be part of Brendan Rodgers’ squad next season or beyond. That remains to be seen.
What is certain is that Livingston had to see off a number of other interested clubs, both from England and Scotland, to get their man. He is sure to be a fine acquisition for David Martindale’s Premiership newcomers.
