After returning to Sparta Prague following his Feyenoord exit, Brian Priske has looked back at his time in Rotterdam.
The Dane was forced to leave after just seven months due to disappointing performances. However, the highly professional coach doesn’t blame anyone and calls his tenure in the Netherlands a “wonderful experience”, either way.
After more than 200 days in Rotterdam, Priske stepped down. “Of course, it was shorter than I expected, but I’ll take a lot of positives with me. Some things might have been different, but I’m happy I got the chance to coach Feyenoord and be part of the club, both through good times and bad. I look back on it with pride and take a lot with me,” he begins in an interview with RTV Rijnmond.
“I take full responsibility for everything that happened. I was the head coach and therefore a major part of it all. I don’t blame anyone, and reflect on what happened and on the people I worked with. But ultimately, I draw my own conclusions, which I keep to myself.”
Priske speaks of a difficult period, which was due to the departure of Arne Slot and the addition of a new team. “When you have 40 per cent new players in a dressing room, it takes a while for that to stabilise. Looking back, I’m quite satisfied with the impact we had.”
In the Netherlands, the former Feyenoord manager says he learned a lot about tactics. Furthermore, he’s proud of his contribution to the development of talents like Givairo Read and Antoni Milambo, and of the European successes that have left a “footprint” for the club.
Pascal Bosschaart succeeded Priske on an interim basis, before Robin van Persie came in to turn the tide. “I’m happy that he’s a club legend. Someone who knows Feyenoord’s values, culture, and DNA. I wish Robin all the best, just like the rest of the club, in the league and hopefully in the Champions League as well.
“The club will always be part of my journey and in my heart, and I will continue to follow them. As I said: even though it ended too soon for me, I hold no grudge. That’s how it works in football.”
