Last year, in what was a season that started poorly and finished well, Roma made it to the Europa League under Claudio Ranieri. Since then, they have managed the best coup of the Italian transfer silly season – getting Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini to the capital.
This season is shaping up to be a very exciting one. Roma’s signings this transfer window can be described as high-risk, high-reward. All four players are young with significant potential but are not yet fully polished. Evan Ferguson, despite being on loan, showed impressive form in the Premier League before his injury. With Gasperini’s proven ability to develop strikers, he could transform the Irishman into something exceptional. Between Wesley, Neil El Aynaoui and Daniele Ghilardi, they have signed young players who can transform them and stay with them for a long time.
However, it is not a squad without its weaknesses. The defence, even with the new signings doesn’t look close to the ones who competed for the Serie A last season. At fullback, in particular, the quality remains rather questionable. Depth in attack is also an issue. Both Paulo Dybala and Evan Ferguson have worse than ideal injury records. With Artem Dovbyk likely to leave, at least one more attacker needs to come in before the window shuts. They also must keep hold of Manu Kone who has had interest from Inter.
Could Roma mount an unlikely title challenge? It’s not outside the realms of possibility but it feels like maybe they are still a season away from that level. Third would be a good first season for Gasperini and Champions League qualification is to be expected. A deep Europa League run might not happen however due to a lack of quality depth in certain positions.
