Preview & team news: Bayern Munich vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Bayern Munich face a tough test against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday afternoon as they seek to maintain their 8-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga. Bayern have a good record at home against the Eagles, with the visitors only winning once there in the Bundesliga back in October 2021. However, earlier in the campaign, both sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw. Frankfurt have only lost three times this season and considering the display they saw in the week from Celtic, Frankfurt may come with a similar tactic and believe they can get something from this tie.

Here is your preview for Bayern Munich vs Eintracht this weekend.

Bayern Munich

The league leaders are coming off the back of a slight midweek scare. A 94th-minute equaliser from Alphonso Davies ensured they progressed in the Champions League against Celtic on Tuesday evening. It was a game many expected Bayern to breeze through, but they were made to work much more harder than they would have wanted.

Last time out in the Bundesliga, Bayern played out a 1-1 draw to title challengers Bayer Leverkusen. It’s a result that very much suits Bayern as they maintained their 8-point lead. In fact, no one in Bundesliga history has ever surrendered an 8-point advantage at this point in the season before.

At the time of kick-off, Bayern will know how Xabi Alonso’s B04 have gotten on, so the pressure to get a win against a tough opponent and keep their advantage could be even more magnified.

Eintracht Frankfurt

The Eagles have won just one of their last four Bundesliga matches, having drawn the other three. Despite the run of draws, Dino Toppmöller’s side currently sit in 3rd on 42 points. Should they win against Bayern on Sunday, they’ll at the very least keep 4th place RB Leipzig five points behind. What’s more, they could be just two points off 2nd should Holstein Kiel manage to get a historical win against Bayer Leverkusen (unlikely, we know).

Despite the recent sale of Omar Marmoush to Manchester City, Frankfurt continues to play fast, counter-attacking football with the line led by Hugo Ekitike accompanied by Can Uzun and Mario Götze just behind him. Between them, the trio have scored 18 goals and assisted 6 times.

Blessed with pace and skill, Frankfurt have plenty of arsenal to cause Bayern problems. Should they execute their game plan correctly, Sunday’s game should make for excellent viewing.

Team News

Bayern Munich

Bayern are currently dealing with a couple of injuries and it’s unsure exactly who will start this Sunday. Harry Kane did not train on Friday and remains a doubt following ankle issues sustained in the match against Celtic last Tuesday.

Additionally, Josip Stanišić didn’t train with the team for an unknown reason, while Dayot Upamecano did not finish training on Friday due to lower back pain. Fellow central defender Kim Min-jae also remains a doubt as the player has requested time away from the starting XI. The Korean international has been in discomfort since October with Achilles tendon issues.

Eintracht Frankfurt

As Dino Toppmöller admitted in Friday’s press conference, Frankfurt are also dealing with a couple of injuries. Robin Koch remains a doubt whilst Mario Götze is only recovering from an illness earlier in the week. Götze will have to see how he is feeling on Saturday and make the call if he is fit enough to feature.

However, in some positive news, Ellyes Skhiri and Oscar Højlund have returned to team training and are available to be apart of the starting XI on Sunday. GGFN | Jamie Allen
