Celtic are already set to sign one Premier League player this summer. Kieran Tierney will be returning to Parkhead when his contract with Arsenal runs out at the end of the campaign, as he has agreed a pre-contract with his boyhood club. He might not be the only one from the English top flight that ends up back in Glasgow either.
Celtic did not make many moves in the winter. But the ones that they made did end up working out. One of them was the decision to sign Jeffrey Schlupp on loan from Crystal Palace until the end of the season.
Schlupp has done well for the most part. Yes, he was heavily criticised for his performance against the Rangers. But that was a rare off day at the office for him. Overall, he hs put in consistent performances in a Celtic shirt.
Thus, there are many who would want to see Schlupp signed on a permanent basis in the summer, when his loan spell is over. Celtic will be helped by the fact that his current deal with Crystal Palace is set to expire at the end of this season.
While Schlupp has not committed to anything, he has not ruled out the idea of a Celtic return on a permanent basis in the summer. As reported by The Herald, he said:
"I am loving it at the minute. Regarding next season nothing has been spoken about. I am concentrating on this season, getting more minutes winning more games. But everything is a possibility. I just focus on winning games and then hopefully I can finish off the season strongly. “I had to think seriously about coming here in the first place. Anything that happens in the summer will be a big decision for me. We will see what happens."
Schlupp won't be the starting left-back for Celtic, even if he is signed on a permanent basis in the summer. That is because Tierney will be making his return to the club.
That being said, considering Tierney's injury record, the club must have a reliable cover option available to them. Unfortunately, it looks like Greg Taylor is expected to leave the club at the end of the campaign. So, Schlupp might be perfect.
