Germany were coming off a shock 3-3 draw against Ukraine and again struggled to get their footing over 90 minutes.

The likes of Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Joshua Kimmich and Florian Wirtz were out of answers as the ball bounced between teammates rather than toward the goal.

Their inability to make the most of their chances, therefore, kept the door open for Poland.

The hosts were playing the fixture to honour the career of Jakub Błaszczykowski, who left the pitch after 16 mins in tears. It was his 109th and final appearance for his country.

Sebastian Szymański teed up defender Jakub Kiwior after a set piece, and the Arsenal star headed home beyond Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen. It was their only shot on target.

Germany continued to dominate the ball, yet despite a staggering 76% possession by the end of the match, nothing could find the net (25 shots to two).

Big guns Niclas Füllkrug, Leon Goretzka, Julian Brandt, Leroy Sané and Robin Gosens all failed to make an impact off the bench. Substitute Marius Wolf, meanwhile, had a goal ruled out.

The visitors did make Poland work for their win, however, as Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny made two incredible saves on Malick Thiaw and Goretzka in the dying moments.

It means Poland beat Germany for just the second time in 90 years, and Hansi Flick will have to go back to the drawing board as pressure mounts.
