One of the most-discussed names in the EFL currently is striker Macaulay Langstaff, who many feel may be available for a move following a quiet season at Millwall.

It was reported by BristolLive that Bristol Rovers admire the player, but that a deal looks unlikely due to “numerous League One” sides eyeing the forward.

Langstaff made 34 Championship appearances for the Lions last season, just 14 of those being from the start, and the 28-year-old managed only one goal; an uncharacteristically fallow year for a player with a strong scoring record.

We asked our Plymouth Argyle Fan Pundit, Luke, whether the striker would be a good fit for the Pilgrims.

Speaking to Football League World, Luke said: “I definitely think Cleverley should consider making a move from Macaulay Langstaff this summer.

“Despite his underwhelming performances at Millwall in the Championship last season, where he only managed to score once, his previous record of 28 goals in League Two with Notts County cannot be overlooked.

“I think he scored 31 in 53 at Gateshead before that, and then a total of 70 goals in 91 appearances at Notts County.

“And yes, this is a lesser standard than League One, but anyone who has those sort of numbers knows where the net is.

“He has the potential to be a prolific goalscorer at a lower level, which is exactly what Argyle need as we aim for promotion.

“Personally, I've been a big fan of Langstaff, and I wanted us to sign him before his move to Millwall.

“Although some fans felt that the step up to the Championship from League Two might have been too big for him, and his subsequent performances in the Championship seemed to confirm those doubts, I still believe that Millwall didn't see the best of what he has to offer.

“And with a little bit of confidence and form, he could be a great signing for whoever gets him.

“At 28, he's in his prime, and a drop down to League One would do him the world of good; reignite his hunger to succeed and prove his detractors wrong.

“This motivation, combined with his proven goalscoring ability, could make him the firepower Argyle needs for the upcoming season.

“Therefore, despite the recent struggles, the potential benefits of signing Langstaff outweigh the risks, and Argyle should do everything they can to bring him to the club, especially given the lack of striking options we currently have.”

Argyle need a marquee forward signing

Having been relegated from the Championship last term, this summer was never likely to be an easy one.

As expected, the Pilgrims’ joint top scorer last season, Ryan Hardie, departed Home Park after scoring 10 Championship goals, linking up with one of the sides to swap divisional places with Plymouth: Wrexham.

It leaves a big gap in the Pilgrims’ squad, and a top signing would undoubtedly lift the mood around a club not currently going through the best time.

In the two seasons before 2024/25, Langstaff netted 41 and 28 goals in the National League and League Two, respectively, albeit that is a lower standard than the third tier.

Nevertheless, it shows Langstaff has that finishing instinct.
