The Philadelphia Union have signed defender Frankie Westfield to a four-year guaranteed deal through 2028 with an option for 2029. The 19-year-old previously played for Philadelphia Union II, the club's MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, logging 9 goals and 10 assists in 76 appearances. Last season he played a big role in the team's run to the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro Final.
Westfield was one of the standouts players at the Philadelphia Union II, and he got good experience in the development league and was the vice-captain last season. His rise to the Philadelphia Union first-team squad was very expected considering his good performances when he played for the academy level. The youngster also got his call-up to the U.S. U-20 national team and made his international bow in 2023 with two friendlies against Chile.
Philadelphia Union sporting director Ernst Tanner spoke of the signing and the versatility in the player and his potential. "Frankie is a young, talented, and versatile defender who, with the ability to work well with both feet, offers us an influential player at both ends of the field. With his experience of being the vice-captain for Union II last season, we are very confident in the maturity and leadership potential he offers both on and off the pitch. We look forward to his contribution to the first team.".
With Bradley Carnell at the reins now, Philadelphia Union will enter their 2025 MLS campaign this season, as they have the opening on February 22 with Orlando City SC. A back reinforcement will come in with Westfield and his adaptation into the first team, something really in scrutiny from now on. This means tactically working with how the coaches need to find his place and his role with this young man within the group.
Philadelphia Union has a recent history of successfully developing homegrown players from Union II, and expectations are high for Westfield to earn opportunities throughout the season. His performances could be crucial in solidifying his place within the squad and proving the club's long-term investment in his potential.
