Pepe backs Mbappe for Ballon d’Or, praises Real Madrid’s breakout star of the season | OneFootball

Legendary Real Madrid defender Pepe made a special appearance at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday for the 12th edition of the Corazon Classic Match, a charity game featuring Real Madrid Legends against Borussia Dortmund Legends that ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Speaking after the event, Pepe shared his admiration for Kylian Mbappe, who began his Real Madrid career with a bang, scoring 42 goals in his debut season.

“He’s had a good year,” said the veteran, referencing Mbappe’s standout performances.

“He’s scored a lot of goals and won the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. I really hope he wins the Ballon d’Or. I want everything to come to Madrid.”

Praise for Real Madrid’s defence

Pepe also offered words of encouragement for the club’s current defensive setup, highlighting two names in particular.

“I think Dean Huijsen’s arrival is very good,” he said, noting the potential of the young defender. He also applauded Raul Asencio, saying, “He finished the year really well.”

The former Madrid stalwart believes the club is well-positioned ahead of a demanding season.

“Real Madrid has a good team and they are preparing well,” he said. “There won’t be much time with the Club World Cup coming, but this team is always competitive.”

Portugal vs Spain and the Cristiano factor

Lastly, Pepe couldn’t avoid a final word about the Nations League final between Portugal and Spain.

While he praised Spain’s emerging talent, he made his allegiances clear. “I hope it’s a beautiful match. Portugal has quality… and we have Cristiano, who can score at any moment.

“But Spain is very strong too, with some great young players. Still, I hope my country, Portugal, wins,” he added.

Eventually, he also praised Spain’s quality, stating, “They have two very good characteristics. The possession game and the transition game with Lamine Yamal. They come out very quickly with him,” he concluded.
