Pep Guardiola has highlighted the “big mistake” he wants Manchester City to avoid as they bid to turnaround their awful form in the Premier League.

The reigning champions head into Wednesday evening’s meeting with Nottingham Forest in Eastlands without a win in seven games in all competitions, including four consecutive defeats in the league.

Man City have dropped to fifth in the table, 11 points behind leaders Liverpool, leaving their hopes of lifting the title for a fifth straight year in peril.

Guardiola says they won’t waste any time feeling sorry for themselves, nor are they thinking beyond the next game.

Guardiola warns Man City to avoid potential ‘big mistake’

“We are thinking of the next one, the same as when we win, we will try to clean the heads and try to make a good selection for the way we have to play,” the Catalan tactician said in his pre-match press conference.

“I don’t know another way. We don’t feel sorry for ourselves, I don’t feel sorry for myself. It is what is it is and we have to accept it.”

Given their current form, Guardiola believes it would be unwise to think about winning the Premier League title, and should instead focus on making gradual progress.

“We cannot think about the results we’ve had in the past and to think about the big targets would be a big mistake.

“We must try to beat a team that is close to us, to take advantage of him and to be close to the top four… we will try to win games because that’s what you have to try to do.

“I would say we are not far for the team in second position, but it is always the way you play, how consistent you are in the boxes that gives you the positive thoughts of what’s going to happen in the future.

“Liverpool have been magnificent and you cannot fight against that situation.

“We have to have moments that are more productive and after that, it’s step by step to go forward.”

Guardiola added that Kevin De Bruyne is close to starting again for Man City, but has ruled out John Stones until at least next.
