After a tumultuous spell defined by public criticism and off-field controversy, Flamengo’s number nine Pedro is showing clear signs of physical resurgence, with recent performance data highlighting his determination to reclaim a regular starting berth. According to Globo, the striker has markedly improved his athletic metrics since returning from a serious knee injury earlier this year—a development that has not gone unnoticed within the club.

During Flamengo’s recent comeback win over Red Bull Bragantino, GPS tracking registered Pedro covering 875 meters at high intensity (speeds above 20km/h), the highest figure of his career. For context, his typical average hovered between 500 and 600 meters. He also logged nearly 10.2 kilometers of overall distance and hit a top speed of 29.5km/h across the 88 minutes he played. These numbers, interpreted by Flamengo’s physical staff, are especially impressive given Pedro’s physical profile and playing style, and suggest a player approaching his physical peak again.

High-intensity “sprints”—a key metric tracked by football scientists—offer a window into Pedro’s renewed drive on the pitch. In the same fixture, the striker’s high-speed running and overall workload matched levels seen during his best form. Internal evaluations at Flamengo indicate that Pedro has responded strongly to criticism and is again displaying the energy that marked his comeback. Club sources told Globo he has been regularly praised in training for his commitment and output.

The Brazilian forward’s best uninterrupted run since the start of 2025 came between April and May, when he started three consecutive matches, including the season’s opener against Corinthians, where he scored twice and assisted once. In May, against Botafogo PB, he managed a full 90 minutes and set career-high marks for both accelerations (71) and decelerations (68), registering a goal and an assist.

Pedro’s relationship with coach Filipe Luís and the hierarchy appears settled. The internal dispute surrounding attempted transfers—specifically a proposal to sell Pedro for €15 million—has been put to bed for now. While the forward still believes he is owed an apology after being “placed on the market,” those close to the squad insist his focus remains squarely on football.

There is no prospect of Pedro departing this window. The striker is in strong contention to remain in the starting lineup for Flamengo’s match against Atlético Mineiro at Maracanã, with final selections pending Saturday’s training. The club plans to keep rewarding Pedro’s improved form with opportunities on the pitch, maintaining his status as a central figure in the squad as the Brasileirão campaign intensifies.
