Liverpool have rejected an opening approach from Real Madrid for Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to a report from The Times.

The 26-year-old Reds full-back is out of contract in the summer, and he can sign a pre-contract with any foreign club in January.

Madrid made their first official move to sign the Liverpool vice-captain by contacting the club’s hierarchy, but the move was immediately rejected.

The Reds have made it clear that the defender is not for sale in January.

Paul Joyce claims that Madrid will exercise their right to speak to Alexander-Arnold, and they are prepared to pay a fee, thought to be about £20 million, in January.

Los Blancos are without Dani Carvajal for the rest of the campaign after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and they have earmarked the Liverpool defender as their potential next big signing.

According to a report from The Athletic, Liverpool have dismissed reports that Alexander-Arnold has informed the club of his desire to join Madrid, and they are hopeful that the England international will sign an extension at Anfield at some point.

Liverpool have made the right decision

Alexander-Arnold is a generation talent. He is a local boy and is naturally loved and adored by the fans.

According to a report from The Daily Mail, the defender has not demanded to be put in the same wage bracket as that of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, and he is very realistic about his position.

Liverpool are the runaway Premier League leaders and are the leading contender to win the Champions League, based on their current form. Likewise, they are on course to reach the final of the Carabao Cup as well. Losing him during the middle of the season will weaken the squad, and the Reds aren’t prepared to do that.

One gets the feeling of “que sera, sera” and all that — whatever happens next will happen – with Liverpool’s approach over the contract situations. At the moment, the best thing to do is enjoy Alexander-Arnold, Salah, and Van Dijk as we enter the final six months of their stay at Anfield.
