In the long and illustrious history of Chelsea Football Club, there has been no greater day than May 19th, 2012.

On this day 13 years ago, the Blues became the kings of Europe for the first time in fittingly dramatic fashion given how the season unfolded.

It had been a chaotic season at Stamford Bridge, with André Villas-Boas getting the sack inside nine months, to be replaced by club legend Roberto Di Matteo.

The Italian had already masterminded an FA Cup triumph, and had seen off Napoli, Benfica and Barcelona in a thrilling and scarcely believable run to the Champions League final.

With several players suspended for the final, most notably John Terry, the odds were heavily weighted against the Blues, particularly with the final in Bayern Munich's home stadium.

Instead, Chelsea pulled off one of the great final wins, with legends Didier Drogba and Petr Čech fittingly at the forefront as their odyssey in the tournament ended.

The Blues won a second Champions League in 2021, but nothing will ever compare to that night in Bavaria.
