Speaking after the loss, Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer said:

“As of today, Xavi will stay with us. I have always said that we make decisions based on all sporting and economic aspects. We allow players to take the next step; we will not block any players. But only if all parameters are right, and that hasn’t been the case so far.”

It is reported that there has only been loose communications between Chelsea and Leipzig over a transfer for Xavi. The Premier League side have reportedly said to the 22-year-old that a move would only be possible if a player heads in the other direction. On top of this, Chelsea are focusing on trying to sign a central defender.

What this means for Leipzig si their plans must also go on hold. Leipzig wants to sign Harvey Elliott from Liverpool and are said to have reached a personal agreement with the England under-21 midfielder. However, until Xavi leaves, they cannot progress the deal.

With the transfer window ticking on, it continues to look likely that the Dutch international may have to spend another six months in Leipzig.
