Scharer has already encountered the Nerazzurri twice in his career: first, in an away 2-0 Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen in 2022 (Edin Dzeko and Denzel Dumfries scored the goals), and then in a 0-0 home draw against Real Sociedad a year later.

The Swiss official has only officiated Bayern Munich once, when the Bavarians beat Lokomotiv Moscow 2-0 in a 2020-21 Champions League group stage game.

Scharer has already overseen Roma, Milan, Atalanta and Italy’s national team games this season.

Scharer made his debut in the Swiss fourth division when he was only 21, and after three years, he took charge of his first game in the second division.

He was promoted to the senior division after less than one year, making his debut in the Swiss Super League in 2013, when he was barely 25.

His debut in European competitions came in 2015 in a Europa League play-off match between Elfsborg and Lahti while his first Champions League game was Barcelona’s 5-1 victory over Ferencvaros at Camp Nou.
