Borussia Dortmund have announced that they have found their replacement for Hans-Joachim Watzke in Lars Ricken who will become the club’s new CEO of Sport.

Ricken is currently the head of Dortmund’s youth department and will begin his new role on May 1st. On his new role, Ricken said: “I would like to thank the Presidential Committee and the management for their trust and the appointment as Managing Director Sport. I am convinced that with the incredible power of this club and the passion of our many motivated employees, we will achieve great victories together and steer Borussia Dortmund into a successful future.”

Directors Thomas Treß and Carsten Cramer, like Ricken, will have their contracts at the club extended until 2027.

Sky Germany reports that Kehl will remain as Sporting director and have his contract extended. Sven Mislintat will take up a role related to squad planning and report to both Kehl and Ricken.

The promotion of Ricken explains the hiring of Thomas Broich from Hertha Berlin. It was reported that Broich would take up a managerial role in the club’s academy and this could be to potentially replace Ricken.

Ricken is best known for his time at Dortmund as a player, most notably when he scored twice in the Champions League final against Juventus in 1997 to win Dortmund their only-ever European trophy.
