The past few weeks in Madrid have been busy with Real Madrid heading into the presidential elections.

The current president, Florentino Perez, presented his candidacy on Friday and stood to retain his post. At the time, there were no other candidates registered and it looked like he would be elected unopposed.

Now, he has officially been re-elected as the Real Madrid president as relayed by following the meeting of the electoral board on Sunday. He will hold the prestigious position until 2029.

Fifth time unopposed

What Real Madrid have achieved under Florentino Perez is simply unbelievable. Right from their three back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles to rebuilding the team and phasing veterans out at the right time, he has steered the club in the right direction.

Managing the club’s finances through the pandemic, keeping the club profitable and well within La Liga’s strict financial regulations – the president has performed his job flawlessly over the past decade.

It is thus unsurprising that he won the elections unopposed once again, just as he did in 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2021. The 2025 election is the fifth straight time he has won without a vote being cast.

Having signed Kylian Mbappe and Endrick last summer, Perez made a statement that he plans to go all out to secure Real Madrid’s future.

The priority next summer will be the defence with a right-back and a centre-back being the top priority. Perez has his eyes on Trent Alexander-Arnold to reinforce the former and it will be a massive statement if he can pull that deal off.

With his team back on top in La Liga with last night’s win, Perez’s new term looks set to begin with more silverware this season. For the best club in the world, his target will be to win on all remaining fronts.
