Florian Wirtz has been at the centre of attention this week with Liverpool actively pushing to sign the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker. But now the player’s focus has changed as Germany play Portugal in the UEFA Nations League Final Four on Wednesday night.

Speaking at Tuesday’s press conference, Julian Nagelsmann confirmed that Wirtz would play against Portugal: “Of course he’ll play,” Nagelsmann said with a bemused look. It would be a return to the Germany starting line-up for the 22-year-old after he missed the quarter-final against Italy after accumulating three yellow cards in the group phase.

Wirtz scored three and provided three assists in six UEFA Nations League A games between July and November, starting in all but one. And with the absence of Jamal Musiala through injury, Wirtz will be tasked with being the creative outlet for the national team.

Germany have an excellent record against Portugal, winning their last five games dating back to July 2006.
