Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Four of the top six in the Premier League with more than two thirds of the season gone.

Actually, the top three in the Premier League this season as we come to the end of February, plus Newcastle United who are sixth.

Though of course, a Newcastle win at Anfield tonight, Arsenal victorious at the City Ground, plus Man City failing to win at Spurs, would see United making up the Premier League top four, with the current top three.

If this scenario did play out across the three matches this Wednesday night, Newcastle would actually be third in the table…

However, ahead of this game at Liverpool tonight, I just wanted to give some perspective.

As I keep hearing people making out that it is a formality, an easy win for the scousers.

Well, hear are the matches played (all competitions) this season, between Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Liverpool:

Arsenal 2 Liverpool 2

Arsenal 3 Forest 0

Liverpool 0 Forest 1

Forest 1 Liverpool 1

Forest 1 Newcastle 1 (Newcastle win on penalties in League Cup)

Newcastle 1 Arsenal 0

Forest 1 Newcastle 3

Arsenal 0 Newcastle 2

Newcastle 4 Forest 3

Taking all the games played involving Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Liverpool this 2024/25 season, you get these sets of results:

Liverpool Played 4 Won 0 Drawn 3 Lost 1

Arsenal Played 5 Won 1 Drawn 1 Lost 3

Forest Played 6 Won 1 Drawn 1 Lost 4

Newcastle Played 7 Won 6 Drawn 1 Lost 0

I get why Liverpool are favourites to win the match tonight, of course they are. They are top of the table and have been very consistent, they have a strong squad that means they can bring five subs on that barely weaken their starting eleven, with the odd exception. Massively helped by the fact that their best two players, Salah and Van Dijk have both started every single one of their 27 Premier League games so far, totally dodging injury.

With less than three months of the season gone, the top three of the Premier League are up there on merit.

So whilst you might think Liverpool are going to win there is a serious argument to say that every chance that Newcastle United can give them a game.

Those results above against the three top teams this season are surely proof of that, Newcastle United winning six of the seven and the other match that 3-3 cracker in December against tonight’s opponents.

It is not blind optimism if believing Newcastle can potentially get something tonight, it is cold hard fact, based on some outstanding form when playing the best teams this season.
