Nathan Redmond could still have a lot to offer a Championship side, despite a rough couple of years at Burnley.
It didn't come as any surprise when Burnley released Nathan Redmond at the end of his contract, but the 31-year-old still has much to offer any Championship side in the upcoming season.
Redmond made just 18 appearances in the two years he spent at Turf Moor before the Clarets released him as part of their 2025 retained list. This past season, injuries and not being part of Scott Parker's plans resulted in just 13 minutes of Championship action.
However, the 31-year-old still has over 100 second-tier appearances to his name, as well as 276 in the Premier League, and it wasn't that long ago that Redmond was one of the key men in the Southampton side who remained in the top flight consistently throughout the 2010s into the early 2020s.
So, Redmond clearly has the ability to still be a solid option for a second-tier side, and for a free transfer, he could resemble a low-risk, high-reward signing, depending on how much per week he'd be demanding in wages.
Birmingham City, Redmond's boyhood club, bolstered their wide pack with the signing of Demarai Gray this summer, so you'd expect the Blues not to be in for a reunion with Redmond.
But Norwich City, another one of his former clubs, could possibly look at adding him before the beginning of the new season.
Norwich recently announced the arrival of Papa Amadou Diallo from FC Metz, and you'd assume that the 21-year-old Senegalese international would be the replacement for Borja Sainz on the left wing, but adding someone like Redmond on a free transfer as cover wouldn't be the worst idea.
Liam Manning is building a solid squad at Carrow Road, but, arguably, a few more signings in the attacking areas need to be made, as his wing options currently are Diallo and Jeffrey Schlupp on the left, and Matej Jurasek on the right, who played just twice last season after arriving in January from Slavia Prague.
The likes of Emiliano Marcondes and Amankwah Forson deputised on the right throughout the 2024/25 term, but Manning should be looking at natural widemen between now and the end of the summer transfer window.
Someone like Redmond may be seen as an uninspiring signing, but, like Schlupp, would arrive with bucketloads of Premier League experience and a couple of Championship promotions under his belt, one of which actually came at Carrow Road in 2015.
Additionally, the 31-year-old is comfortable operating on both flanks, meaning he could slot in whenever he is needed in a couple of different positions.
He may not be brought in to start every week, and if he were the only addition on the right wing between now and September 1st at Carrow Road, then that could be a cause for concern, but as a backup, he'd be a solid addition.
Whilst his time at Southampton is what Redmond is most known for, his three-year spell at Norwich saw him miss just 10 league games as he racked up 123 appearances in all competitions, the second most out of any club he's played for in his career.
His 12 assists in the 2014/15 season for Norwich placed him fifth in the Championship, and he played a huge part in their play-off run that year, scoring and assisting in their semi-final second leg win over Ipswich Town before scoring at Wembley in their 2-0 win over Middlesbrough.
There's an argument to be made that, if the Canaries hadn't suffered their second relegation from the Premier League in three seasons in 2015/16, Redmond would have enjoyed a longer career at Carrow Road.
This summer, he may have the opportunity to extend his Norwich tenure, and if the Canaries are looking for highly experienced backups, Redmond may be one of the best on the free agent market.
