Chelsea offered one of their transfer listed players in an ambitious attempt to sign one of La Liga’s best young talents, Mundo Deportivo are reporting today.

A swap deal involving Christopher Nkunku and Fermin Lopez was proposed earlier in the summer, according to the report.

The Spanish paper says that Chelsea thought Barca might be willing to sell, given their endless financial peril. Lopez will be competing with the likes of Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Raphinha and now Marcus Rashford in attacking positions, and the Blues hoped their Catalan colleagues might accordingly be willing to cash in on their academy talent.

The Blaugrana rejected out of hand the attempt to offer Christopher Nkunku as a part exchange for Lopez. Manager Hansi Flick is supposedly a huge fan of Lopez, and has some big plans for him this season. Amusingly, the German coach apparently read an online rumour about the youngster wanting to leave and then contacted him on the phone to check that it wasn’t true.

In the case of Nkunku, things remain very quiet. There’s simply been no concrete offers, and not much interest at all beyond some rumoured Bayern desire to get the former Leipzig star back to the Bundesliga.

We’re hearing more cases like this, where Chelsea are actively offering the player around to try to get him a move. That’s never good for their value.

A few sources are saying that the Xavi Simons deal needs the Blues to make some sales before it can be completed, so we can imagine they’re desperate to make this one of them. But it certainly won’t be in a trade for a brilliant 22 year old like Fermin. Let’s be honest, that was a little ambitious…
