Nico Williams is reportedly not likely to make a blockbuster move to the Premier League in the January transfer window.
The Athletic Club winger has attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, including Barcelona, following his exploits for club and country last year.
The 22-year-old helped the Bilbao outfit claim their first Copa del Rey in 40 years and played an instrumental role in Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024, scoring the opening goal in the side’s 2-1 win over England in the final.
Williams could leave the Basque region this month if another club triggers his release clause, which is set at €60 million, although different figures have been reported in the past.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have been linked with the player, with the Athletic claiming that Mikel Arteta “would like” to sign Williams this month.
However, such a transfer is “highly unlikely” due to the finances involved, which would include his exorbitant wages. He’s reportedly earning around €200,000 per week.
Williams’ release clause would also need to be paid in full up front in order to guarantee his exit from Athletic. A summer transfer is “more plausible”, reports David Ornstein.
“I’m not thinking about my future now. I’m so happy to be at Athletic, fans are happy too,” Williams told El Mundo back in October.
“Bilbao is my home, I’m really happy and I want to enjoy it here. I want to bring Athletic at the best level. The dream is that Europa League final at San Mamés.”
