Nico Raskin commits as Rangers midfielder changes attitude

There has been a big, big change in Belgian midfielder Nico Raskin, after the 23-year-old both finished the season strongly for Rangers, and was quoted with infinitely-more positive words about his club and manager over the weekend.

If we remember back to October last year and his dimwitted comments about Rangers being ‘just a stage’ in his career, his journey to playing for Chelsea, then his favour with fans rather sunk a tad, not least with Ibrox Noise.

He hadn’t played especially well, and he hadn’t earned the right to boast about his ambitions, especially ones away from Rangers.

He barely featured under-then new manager Philippe Clement, who clearly wasn’t a fan of a player whose heart apparently wasn’t at the club.

But there’s been a change.

Not only did we see notable improvements from him on the pitch, when he finally started getting a game or two at the end of the season, but he’s now in the press saying very different things.

Here’s his latest:

“Things are going well at Rangers. Philippe Clement brought a fresh breath of fresh air, the European way of working there. It’s a very different football in the UK than in Europe. So for me it’s good. I found habits that I had at Standard and in Europe. Next season, I hope to be able to play as much as possible and have a good European campaign, because we count on that a lot there. And then being able to be champion at the end of the year. It would be a great season.”

This is a lot more positive, and points to an attitude change from the Belgian. Raskin has had to earn his place in this team, and he’s clearly backed off from the ‘ambition’ rhetoric that was doing him no favours, and by focusing on Rangers it’s better for him and better for the club.

Playing as he did tail end of the season, that Nico Raskin will be an asset to the team. But he has a lot of work ahead of him to completely win us over again.
