It is now reported that this summer could see Newcastle United potentially play Liverpool.
Last month, we reported claims (see below) that Eddie Howe and his squad could be lined up to play in Hong Kong as part of pre-season preparations.
The brand new Kai Tak 50,000 capacity stadium in Kowloon is keen to host Premier League clubs this summer and as well as Newcastle United, The Mail now report that Liverpool are also understood to be in talks to possibly play there in pre-season, setting up a potential repeat of last weekend’s League Cup final.
Last summer Newcastle United played two friendlies in Japan and with AC Milan, Arsenal and Tottenham also said to be talking to people in Hong Kong, United maybe ending up with more than one high level friendly in Kowloon this summer.
The new report from The Mail also adds that Newcastle United could repeat last summer’s successful stay at the world class facilities at the Adidas HQ in Herzogenaurach, Germany.
That July 2024 visit included a behind closed doors friendly at the Adidas headquarters, which ended Newcastle 3 SpVgg Unterhaching 1.

The Mag report – 28 February 2025:
‘Newcastle United are not taking part in the Premier League Summer Series later this year in the USA.
With The Athletic reporting that Manchester United, West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton are all lined up to take part.
This 2025 Premier League Summer Series of matches won’t be allowed to kick-off until mid-July, after the conclusion of the daft FIFA Club World Cup, which is also being played in America.
The first Premier League Summer Series event was held in 2023, which included Brentford, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Fulham and Brighton.
With Chelsea winning the tournament, finishing ahead of Aston Villa in second and Newcastle United in third.
Now The Mail say that after ‘missing out’ on a place in the 2025 Premier League Summer Series, Newcastle United are looking to instead go to Hong Kong.
They report that Eddie Howe’s side are exploring the chance of playing matches at the new Kai Tak 50,000 capacity stadium in Kowloon, with one of the games potentially against Tottenham.
The 2025/26 Premier League season kicks off on the weekend of Saturday 16 August 2025 and back in early December 2024, it was widely reported that Newcastle will play a pre-season friendly at Celtic on 19 July 2025. So any potential visit to Hong Kong, or indeed anywhere else overseas, would presumably be scheduled closer to the start of the new season.
