Has the scale of Newcastle United injuries been anything out of the ordinary this season?

To myself and pretty much any other rational Newcastle United fan, the answer to that question is surely a resounding yes!

Not just the number of Newcastle United injuries and how long players have been out for, but also who has been injured, with sadly so many key players missing for so many matches.

The injury situation I believe is unprecedented in my time following NUFC for certain.

However, so many outsiders, including those in the media, keen to claim that the situation at St James’ Park has been nothing special, nothing out of the ordinary, ‘All clubs get injuries’ etc etc.

Well now a new report from The Athletic (via Premierinjuries.com) has compared the 2o Premier League clubs this season, with just the final round of PL games remaining on Sunday.

It has looked at the 20 Premier League clubs and the total days lost due to injuries.

As you can see, the Newcastle United injuries way out ahead of the rest.

Far more days (1,915) lost to injuries, over 200 more days than any other PL club this season.

Those stats don’t include suspensions either, which means as well as smaller bans for the likes of Gordon and Bruno due to picking up too many yellow cards, this info doesn’t include the Tonali ban which covers almost all of this current season.

What Eddie Howe has had to deal with has been unprecedented.

It is crazy some of the differences.

The days lost to Newcastle United injuries around three times as many as the likes of West Ham and Manchester City.

More than twice as many as Arsenal and Everton, around 50% more than Tottenham and Villa etc etc.

I think it emphasises just how extreme it has been, when as we go into this final match against Brentford, NUFC fans are thinking the number of missing players isn’t too bad. Yet definitely missing for Newcastle United on Sunday are Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley, Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman, Matt Targett and Joe Willock, whilst there is a doubt about Anthony Gordon’s participation and we are hoping Callum Wilson is ok to play after missing the last two matches.
