Newcastle United considered bringing former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to the St James’ Park club this summer but they decided he was too injury-prone, according to The Guardian.
Newcastle want to sign another number 9 even if Alexander Isak does not leave before the transfer deadline, and the England international was briefly considered.
However, the Magpies opted against doing a deal for the free agent after weighing up the pros and cons and will look elsewhere.
Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, and while Newcastle have rejected a chance to sign him, Leeds United are closing in on a move.
The 28-year-old is currently undergoing a medical at the Elland Road club with a view to sealing a free transfer to the promoted Premier League club.
The striker left Everton after 71 goals in 274 appearances across nine seasons, and he will be desperate to prove himself elsewhere and force his way back into the Three Lions as the last of his 11 caps came in 2021.
Calvert-Lewin made 26 league appearances last term and 33 in 2023-24, and Newcastle could have taken a punt on him.
His goal-record in the last four seasons was not convincing enough as he has scored just 17 league goals since the beginning of the 2021-22 season.
He was unavailable for selection for 529 days across those four campaigns, and the Magpies opted to stay away despite his availability on a free.
Toons manager Eddie Howe has other options on his radar, with Newcastle reportedly one of the clubs taking a look at Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund.
Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson reportedly favours a move to the Tyneside club should he leave the Blues this summer, and more names will be linked with them as we approach the last two weeks of the window.
