Newcastle United are exploring a move to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The English international could leave the Spanish giants just after one year as part of the summer overhaul.
Atletico are working on midfield reinforcements in the transfer window. They have completed the signing of Alex Baena from Villarreal, and a deal for Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso is on the cards.
Gallagher feels that his game time could be reduced this season due to tough competition in the squad.
The ex-Chelsea man wants to be in good form to secure a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for next year’s World Cup.
However, Los Rojiblancos highly regard Gallagher’s potential and the positive impact he made in his debut season.
He registered four goals and six assists in 50 games, but only started half of the matches in La Liga and the Champions League.
Newcastle are looking to persuade Gallagher to strengthen their midfield, with Sean Longstaff potentially on his way out this summer.
Leeds United are working on a deal to sign Longstaff, who has fallen down the pecking order at St. James’ Park.
The Magpies gaffer Eddie Howe sees Gallagher as a solid addition to the squad ahead of the return to the Champions League in the upcoming season.
Gallagher’s robustness, ability to attack the box and impressive work-rate make him a great fit for Newcastle to shore up the midfield.
Tottenham Hotspur have also expressed their interest in the English midfielder, but a deal could be difficult due to his Chelsea past.
Newcastle United have completed their first signing of the summer by announcing Anthony Elanga’s deal, while more reinforcements are expected to follow.
They have identified Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini as a potential summer target.
