Newcastle United have signed Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan in a deal worth £55 million plus add-ons. He has signed a five-year contract until 2028.

The Magpies have made a clear statement with the signing of the former Brescia man, who has earned comparisons to Andrea Pirlo but sees himself more as a Gennaro Gattuso.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wanted two top midfield additions ahead of next season when they will be in the Champions League, and he has landed his first man.

Tonali moved to AC Milan from Brescia initially on loan. He struggled in his first season but still showed promising signs as they won the Scudetto for the first time in 11 years.

The Rossoneri signed him permanently last season, and he came into his own. The 23-year-old scored two goals and registered seven assists (12 big chances created) as Milan finished fourth in Serie A.

Tonali recorded two assists (nine big chances created) in the UEFA Champions League as they reached the semi-final. He will hope to bring his terrific form from last season to the Premier League.

Tonali is highly-regarded as one of the top talents in Italy and has earned 14 caps for the Italian national team.

Also, he captained the Italy Under-21 side to the Under-21 European Championship this summer.

Following the transfer, Sandro Tonali said (via NUFC’s website): “First of all, I want to thank Newcastle United because they are giving me a huge opportunity for my career.

“I want to repay the trust on the pitch, giving it my all, as I always have. I’m really excited about playing at St. James’ Park, I can’t wait to feel the warmth of the fans.”

Newcastle United head coach, Eddie Howe, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Sandro to Newcastle United.

“He is an exceptional talent and has the mentality, physicality and technical attributes to be a great fit for us.

“At 23, Sandro already has important experience as a key player in one of Europe’s top leagues and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his country.

“But he also has the opportunity and potential to grow and evolve with us, and I’m excited to add him to our squad as we approach the exciting season ahead.”
