Newcastle United and Arsenal meet in the Carabao Cup semi-finals this evening with the stakes high at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe’s side have the advantage after a first-leg win in North London. Goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon sealed success on the road and Newcastle are in pole position to book their place at Wembley.
Arsenal are aiming to overturn the 2-0 deficit and can take confidence from an emphatic weekend win over Manchester City at the Emirates.
Coincidentally, tonight’s clash comes on the 14th anniversary of a classic contest between the teams. On this day in 2011, the two teams shared eight goals in an unforgettable game in the North East.
Arsenal raced into a seemingly unsurmountable lead. Theo Walcott opened the scoring inside 44 seconds before a Johan Djourou header and a strike from Robin van Persie put the Gunners 3-0 up in less than 10 minutes.
Van Persie headed in a fourth for the visitors after 26 minutes but Abou Diaby’s red card reduced the North Londoners to 10 men early in the second period.
Bouyed on by their man advantage, Newcastle fought back. Joey Barton scored two penalties either side of a goal from Leon Best, before Cheik Tiote’s stunning long-range equaliser completed the comeback.
The Ivorian blasted in from distance – the only goal he scored in 156 Newcastle appearances – to send St James’ Park into pandemonium.
It was the first time in Premier League history that a team had recovered from four goals down to earn a result.
