It proved to be a game too far for getting the result but thanks to results elsewhere WE ARE IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!!

It wasn’t just about today though. We got there on merit and Manchester United didn’t get us into the Champions League…

What an amazing season, a day at Wembley that will be never be forgotten and now next season we have extra opportunities to make some more great memories.

Thank you Newcastle United for an awesome season, can’t wait for August !!’

David Punton:

‘Of all the final day permutations I didn’t imagine this one coming to pass.

Champions League football secured despite one of our worst performances of the season.

All down to Villa losing 2-0 at Manchester Utd after being reduced to ten men. Sob on the Holte End.

It almost feels strange celebrating after a loss, but the Champions League place is MASSIVE.

It unlocks revenue streams for PSR headroom. What we have seen today, we may just need a few new players in.

We have to play better than that showing today and I know this team can.

It brings the curtain down on a brilliant season.

Never forget, Eddie Howe delivered us a trophy and has now scraped the final Champions League place.

Time to relax.

See you next season for another ride on the Toon rollercoaster.’

Billy Miller:

‘Our best day of the season was against one team from Liverpool.

We almost had our worst against the other lot from that city.

I had a bad feeling about the narrative once Sunderland confirmed promotion.

I imagined Pickford keeping a clean sheet and making it a double celebration for the Mackems.

He did precisely that but somehow another ex-Sunderland player in Amad did us the biggest of favours by getting the opener against Villa.

The team that denied us European football last season helped us earn Champions League this time out.

Far more dramatic than I’d have liked it to have been.

I definitely think we got the tactics wrong, starting with the three centre backs.

However, Eddie Howe gets a lot more things right than wrong and has overseen the most successful season I’ve witnessed in my lifetime.

Thank you to Eddie and each and every player and member of staff.’

Mark Jankowski:

‘Newcastle entered Sunday with Champions League in their own hands.

In a season where Newcastle have been a dominant team what we were treated too was a very nervous performance.

Newcastle weren’t able to press home a bright start and an Everton side, who were anything other than on their holidays, grew into the game.

Eventually Everton’s endeavour paid off and they took a deserved lead.

Newcastle did exert some pressure on Pickford’s goal but he was equal to our efforts.

In the end Man Utd did us the biggest of favours and sealed our place in next season’s Champions League.

Newcastle are back in the big time and we’re here to stay.’

Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey…:

‘Of all the permutations that had us reach the promised land, that set of results was far from what I was expecting.

We were poor today and that performance brutally exposes the limitations of our squad.

But that coveted fifth place finish is earned across 38 games and Eddie Howe has squeezed every last drop out of those lads.

A trophy and a Champions League place. What a season!’

Tony Mallabar:

‘I get it, I totally get it.

Sometimes not everything is Roses and Unicorns in the garden.

But losing today, along with home defeats to the mighty Bournemouth, Fulham and Brighton is well…I am just pi..ed off.’

Bazoox:

‘A criminally bad performance on the last day of the season when we had it all to play for.

Maybe it’s time to cash in on one of our big names, to help move things rapidly forward.

The mind boggles at times.’

The Armchair fan:

‘Winning a trophy and qualifying for the Champions League is a brilliant season for the Toon! I’ll be raising a glass to Man United tonight….never thought I’d say that!’

Simon Ritter:

‘Never in my memory have fans losing at home been desperately blowing for the final whistle.

We all thought before kick-off United needed at least a point to secure the coveted Champions League berth.

How could we have doubted Rubin Amorim and his wonderful players?

With a little help from the ref, they beat Villa to lift us back into fifth place.

The dismissal of the obnoxious Martinez and a dubiously disallowed Villa opener played into our hands.

When former mackem Diallo did the business, you could feel the relief sweep around a horribly nervous St James’ Park.

Mission accomplished, however bizarre the finale.

Just look at the table!’
